Resistance Check: Turn the rotor and listen for any bearing resistance, friction noise, or unusual sounds between the rotor and stator. If resistance seems high, remove the brush and test again to determine if the issue is with the brush or the bearing.
Rotor Shaft Inspection: Rotate the rotor shaft and observe the pulley for any noticeable play or wobbling, which could indicate a bent rotor shaft.
2. Manual Testing of the Alternator
To further assess the alternator’s performance, perform the following tests:
Voltage Test: Use a DC power supply (6~12V) to excite the alternator’s magnetic field. Connect the negative terminal of the power supply to the ground and the positive terminal to the alternator’s magnetic field terminal. Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage between the generator armature terminal and the ground wire.
Manual Rotation Test: Turn the generator pulley by hand as fast as possible. For a 12V alternator, the voltage should reach 3~5V; for a 24V alternator, it should reach 5~8V.
Rope Test: Wrap a nylon rope around the pulley, clamp the alternator in a vise, and pull the rope to make the alternator spin. The no-load voltage should be 10~12V for a 12V alternator or above 20V for a 24V alternator.
If your tests indicate that the alternator is operating within these voltage ranges, the alternator is likely functioning correctly, and the issue may lie elsewhere in the system. If the results fall outside these ranges, it suggests a problem with the alternator itself, requiring further disassembly to diagnose the issue.
