Installation Method for 21-Tooth Clutch Friction Disc
I. Pre-installation Preparation
1. Tool and Consumable Preparation
Special Tools: Clutch centering tool (21-tooth specification, matched with the input shaft spline), torque wrench (0–100N·m), socket wrench (12/14/17mm), clutch release tool, copper rod, rubber hammer
Consumables: Clutch pilot bearing grease (high-temperature lithium-based grease), thread locker (Loctite 243), lock washers, clutch disc locating pins (optional), cleaning solvent (degreaser)
Protective Equipment: Anti-slip gloves, safety goggles, dust mask
2. Safety Specifications
Disconnect the negative cable of the vehicle battery and release the residual pressure of the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder.
Ensure the gearbox has been removed, the flywheel surface poses no rotation risk, and secure the engine with a bracket to prevent tipping.
Clean oil stains, rust, and wear grooves on the surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate; grind or replace them if necessary.
Do not operate when the flywheel is hot to avoid scalding or aging of the friction disc material.
3. Parts Inspection and Matching
Core Matching Item: Confirm that the friction disc has 21 spline teeth, which are fully matched with the gearbox input shaft spline, and the spline fit clearance is ≤0.15mm.
Check that the friction disc surface is free of cracks, chips, and ablation; the rivet embedment depth is ≥0.3mm (for wet friction discs without rivet structure, check the integrity of the coating).
Verify that the outer diameter, inner diameter, and thickness of the friction disc are consistent with the original parts to avoid interference with the flywheel housing or pressure plate.
Check that the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate has uniform elasticity, the wear of the release fingers is ≤0.5mm; the end face runout of the flywheel is ≤0.2mm.
II. Installation Steps
1. Flywheel and Pressure Plate Pre-treatment
Thoroughly clean the friction surface of the flywheel and the working surface of the pressure plate with a degreaser, and ensure no oil residue after air-drying.
Inspect the flywheel bolts; replace any stretched or stripped bolts. Apply thread locker and tighten them in a diagonal sequence. Refer to the engine maintenance manual for the torque value (usually 35–45N·m).
Apply high-temperature grease to the clutch pilot bearing to ensure smooth rotation without jamming.
2. Friction Disc Positioning and Centering (Key Step)
Pass the 21-tooth clutch centering tool through the spline hole of the friction disc to simulate the positioning of the gearbox input shaft.
Place the friction disc smoothly on the flywheel friction surface, paying attention to the direction mark:
Dry friction disc: The side marked "FLYWHEEL SIDE" shall face the flywheel; if there is no mark, the side with damping springs shall face the gearbox.
Wet friction disc: The side with smooth coating shall face the pressure plate, and the side with rough substrate shall face the flywheel (or follow the manufacturer's mark).
Adjust the position of the friction disc to ensure it is concentric with the flywheel, and its edge fits evenly with the flywheel friction surface without deflection.
Insert the centering tool into the inner hole of the flywheel pilot bearing to ensure the friction disc splines are fully engaged with the centering tool without loosening.
3. Pressure Plate Installation and Tightening
Fit the clutch pressure plate smoothly over the outside of the friction disc and align the mounting holes of the pressure plate with those of the flywheel.
Manually screw in all pressure plate mounting bolts (do not fully tighten) to ensure the pressure plate compresses the friction disc evenly.
Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts in a cross-diagonal sequence in 3 stages:
Stage 1: Pre-tighten to 10–15N·m
Stage 2: Tighten to 50% of the standard torque
Stage 3: Tighten to the original factory standard torque (usually 25–30N·m, refer to the vehicle manual for specific values)
After tightening, check the flatness of the pressure plate surface to ensure no warping and no jamming at the edge of the friction disc.
4. Centering Tool Removal and Subsequent Assembly
After confirming that all pressure plate bolts are fully tightened, slowly pull out the clutch centering tool.
Install the clutch release bearing and apply grease to the contact area between the release fork and the bearing.
Reinstall the gearbox, connect the clutch slave cylinder, and bleed the air from the hydraulic pipeline.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and adjust the clutch pedal travel, with the free travel controlled within 15–25mm.
III. Post-installation Testing
No-load Test: Start the engine, depress the clutch pedal to shift gears, and confirm smooth gear shifting without difficulty or abnormal noise.
Load Test: Drive the vehicle with no load; check that there is no jitter or slipping during starting, and the clutch engages smoothly.
Heat Test: After 3–5 consecutive starts, check that the external temperature of the flywheel housing is normal and there is no burning odor.
Core Precautions for Installation of 21-Tooth Clutch Friction Disc
I. Safe Operation Precautions
1. Power-off and Pressure Relief Specifications
Must disconnect the negative cable of the vehicle battery and release the residual pressure of the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder to prevent personal injury caused by accidental movement of the release fork.
After the gearbox is removed, secure the engine with a dedicated bracket to avoid tipping and falling; the flywheel must be fixed with a locking tool, and operation during rotation is strictly prohibited.
Do not perform installation when the flywheel is hot (within 1 hour after shutdown). High temperature will accelerate the aging of friction disc materials and may cause scalding.
2. Parts Cleaning and Protection
Wear anti-slip gloves, safety goggles and a dust mask during operation to avoid inhaling friction disc dust into the respiratory tract or contaminating the skin with oil stains.
Use a special degreaser to clean the surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate; flammable solvents such as gasoline are prohibited to prevent fire.
The friction disc shall be stored in a dry and clean environment, and shall not be contaminated with oil stains or water. Otherwise, it will cause clutch slipping failure after installation.
3. Tool Usage Safety
The centering tool must be precisely matched with the 21-tooth spline. Do not use tools with mismatched specifications for forced positioning to avoid damaging the spline teeth.
Do not use an extended wrench to apply extra force when tightening bolts, to prevent bolt breakage or thread slipping due to excessive torque.
Use a copper rod or rubber hammer when tapping the pressure plate or flywheel; direct tapping with an iron hammer is prohibited to prevent component deformation.
