Pre-Installation Preparation
- Vehicle and Accessory PreparationPark the vehicle on a solid, flat surface. Turn off the engine, engage the handbrake, shift to neutral, and securely lift the vehicle with professional lifting equipment. Inspect the new clutch pressure plate and friction disc to ensure no cracks, ablation, or other defects. Verify that the friction disc rivet sinkage does not exceed 0.3mm, the pressure plate diaphragm spring height difference is within 0.5mm, and the accessory model is compatible with the vehicle.
- Tool and Cleaning PreparationPrepare socket wrenches, a torque wrench, a clutch friction disc alignment guide rod (special tool MD998127), Mitsubishi genuine grease (code 0101011) or equivalent alternative grease, and water-moistened cloths. Wipe the flywheel surface and transmission input shaft splines with a water-moistened cloth to remove oil and residues. Strictly prohibit sanding or dry brushing to avoid generating harmful debris.
Core Installation Steps
- Friction Disc Preparation and PositioningApply a uniform layer of special grease to the spline part of the clutch friction disc, then wipe off excess grease to prevent future slippage. Insert the alignment guide rod into the flywheel center, slide the friction disc onto the rod, and ensure the friction disc center is aligned with the flywheel center. Pay attention to the installation direction: the side marked "Flywheel Side" must face the flywheel—do not reverse it.
- Pressure Plate Installation and SecuringPlace the new pressure plate over the friction disc and align the bolt holes. Hand-tighten the pressure plate mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern first, then use a torque wrench to tighten them evenly in two stages to FAW Jiefang’s specified torque of 1.9kg・m. This prevents pressure plate deformation from uneven force, which could affect subsequent clutch performance.
- Auxiliary Component AssemblyApply special grease to the inner surface of the release bearing and its contact surface with the release fork. Install the release bearing in the corresponding position, ensuring smooth rotation without jamming. Next, install the release fork, allowing it to slide in the specified direction and engage with the return clip. Insert the release lever pin—avoid applying force in other directions to prevent damaging the return clip.
Reassembly and Inspection/Commissioning
- Transmission ReinstallationAdjust the transmission position to accurately align the input shaft with the friction disc splines. Push the transmission in smoothly—never force it to avoid spline damage. Subsequently, tighten the transmission mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern and reconnect previously disconnected wiring harnesses and other connectors.
- System Inspection
For hydraulic clutch slave cylinders: Inspect internal components for damage. After assembly, check for oil leaks and complete the bleeding process.
Toggle the release fork repeatedly to test that the release bearing rotates smoothly and the friction disc slides without obstruction.
- Test Drive AcceptanceStart the vehicle and test the clutch pedal travel for normal operation. Shift through all gears to check for smooth shifting. During low-speed driving, observe that clutch engagement and disengagement are smooth, with no judder, slippage, or abnormal noise. Avoid heavy loads during the initial operation period to allow full break-in between the friction disc and pressure plate, and further identify any installation issues.
I. Critical Pre-Installation Checks
Ensure accessories are accurately matched to the vehicle model. Focus on verifying the friction disc outer diameter, spline tooth count, and pressure plate bolt hole positions. Some heavy-duty FAW Jiefang models have thickness grading marks on the friction disc; select the one consistent with the original vehicle specifications.
Inspect the flywheel end face. If wear grooves exceed 0.5mm in depth, flatness deviation exceeds 0.2mm, or thermal cracks exist, the flywheel must be repaired or replaced first. Otherwise, it will cause uneven pressure on the pressure plate and abnormal wear of the friction disc.
Calibrate specialized tools in advance, especially the torque wrench, to ensure accurate torque output. The alignment guide rod must fit tightly with the flywheel center hole to avoid positioning deviations.
II. Strict Prohibitions During Installation
Strictly prohibit oil or grease contamination on the mating surfaces of the friction disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. Clean only with a water-moistened cloth—never use strong solvents such as gasoline or diesel—to prevent reduced friction coefficient and subsequent slippage.
Never reverse the friction disc installation direction. The side with damping springs or marked "Flywheel Side" must face the flywheel. Reversing it will result in incomplete clutch release and abnormal pedal travel.
Bolt tightening must follow the process: "crisscross pre-tightening → two-stage tightening → torque compliance". The pressure plate fixing bolt torque must strictly adhere to 1.9kg・m; do not arbitrarily increase or decrease it to avoid pressure plate deformation.
Grease can only be applied to the spline hole, release bearing, and release fork contact points, with an appropriate amount. Excess grease must be wiped clean to prevent contamination of the friction surface after melting at high temperatures.
III. Commercial Vehicle-Specific Adaptation Requirements
After installing the release bearing, ensure the axial clearance is between 0.3-0.5mm, with smooth rotation and no abnormal noise. For heavy-duty models, additionally check the rigidity of the release fork to avoid deformation under stress.
Thoroughly bleed the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder. Repeatedly press the pedal until no air bubbles are discharged. Control the pedal free travel between 15-20mm to ensure reliable release under heavy-load conditions.
During assembly, check the locating pins of the clutch housing and flywheel housing to ensure they are properly installed. This prevents misalignment between the transmission input shaft and the friction disc splines, which can cause difficulty shifting gears.
