Preparations
Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the handbrake and shift to neutral. Lift the vehicle with a jack and secure it with safety stands to prevent movement during operation.
Prepare tools such as wrenches, circlip pliers, high-temperature resistant grease, and a clutch disc alignment tool. Meanwhile, inspect the new release bearing to ensure it is undamaged and rotates smoothly.
Removing Relevant Components (Preparation for Bearing Installation)
First remove the vehicle's wheels, then sequentially detach the transmission housing and flywheel housing bolts, and remove the flywheel housing. For some Changan models (e.g., Zhixiang), it is also necessary to disconnect the inlet pipe and high-pressure pipe of the clutch master cylinder.
Remove the fixing bolts of the clutch pressure plate. Note that the bolts should be loosened gradually in a diagonal pattern to avoid pressure plate deformation. Subsequently, remove the pressure plate and clutch disc to expose the old release bearing, and finally detach the old release bearing and its fixing components.
Cleaning and Pretreatment
Thoroughly clean oil stains and impurities from the release bearing mounting position, transmission input shaft splines, clutch fork, and other contact components.
Apply high-temperature resistant grease to the input shaft splines of Changan models equipped with hydraulic clutches (e.g., Zhixiang); a thin layer of grease should also be applied to the contact surface between the release fork and release bearing of Suzuki models to reduce subsequent wear.
Core Installation Operation
Changan Models: For pressure-fit type release bearings (e.g., Changan Zhixiang), align the new bearing with the mounting position of the clutch slave cylinder and press it into the slave cylinder using a pressing tool to ensure a secure interference fit. Then insert the slave cylinder with the installed bearing into the mounting position, fasten it with bolts, and reinstall components such as the hydraulic retention valve. For models like Changan Benben, directly slide the release bearing onto the release sleeve and align it with the clutch fork for installation.
Suzuki Models: Taking the Suzuki Swift as an example, gently slide the release bearing onto the release sleeve and align it with the mating position between the clutch fork and pressure plate. If the bearing is equipped with a circlip, use circlip pliers to expand the circlip, install the bearing in place, and then reset the circlip to secure it, ensuring flexible contact between the bearing and the fork.
Component Reset and Debugging
Reinstall the clutch disc and pressure plate in the reverse order of removal. The pressure plate bolts should be tightened gradually in a diagonal pattern to the torque specified by the vehicle model. For some Changan models, a clutch disc alignment tool is required for positioning to avoid installation deviation.
Reinstall the transmission assembly. For Changan models with hydraulic clutches, it is also necessary to bleed the clutch system: loosen the bleed screw, press the clutch pedal until brake fluid flows out without bubbles, then tighten the bleed screw and install the protective cover.
Start the vehicle for testing: check if the clutch pedal travel is normal, and if the clutch engages and disengages smoothly without abnormal noise. If all conditions are met, the installation is qualified.
I. General Safety and Operation Specifications
Vehicle Fixation Safety
The vehicle must be supported by safety stands (relying solely on a jack is prohibited) to ensure the body is level and stable; clear obstacles in the operating area to prevent tools or parts from falling and causing injury.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before removing/installing the transmission (for some Suzuki models, record the radio code to avoid locking after power loss).
Tool and Torque Requirements
Use wrenches and circlip pliers of matching specifications (avoid prying the circlip with hard objects such as screwdrivers to prevent deformation); the pressure plate bolts and transmission fixing bolts must be tightened gradually in a diagonal pattern to the torque specified by the vehicle model (common torque for Changan is 8-12N・m, 10-15N・m for Suzuki Swift/Alto, and specific values shall be subject to the vehicle's repair manual). Over-tightening is prohibited as it may cause part deformation, while under-tightening may lead to abnormal noise or detachment.
Component Cleaning and Inspection
Thoroughly clean oil stains and iron filings from the release bearing mounting seat, fork contact surface, and input shaft splines before installation to avoid bearing wear or jamming caused by impurities.
Inspect the new bearing: it should rotate flexibly without jamming or abnormal noise, and the sealing ring should be intact (to prevent grease leakage); simultaneously check if the clutch disc spline sleeve and pressure plate diaphragm spring are deformed. Replace damaged parts synchronously if any.
II. Lubrication and Assembly Details
Grease Usage Specifications
Only use high-temperature resistant and wear-resistant clutch-specific grease (ordinary butter is prohibited as it easily fails at high temperatures). Application positions include: input shaft splines, contact surface between the release bearing and fork, and circlip groove (apply a thin layer only to avoid excessive grease splashing onto the clutch disc and causing slipping).
Installation Direction and Positioning
The release bearing of some Suzuki models (e.g., SX4, Vitara) is marked with "TOP" "FRONT" or an arrow. It must be installed with the mark facing the engine side; reverse installation will result in incomplete clutch disengagement and heavy pedal feel.
Changan models with hydraulic clutches (e.g., Zhixiang, CS35) require positioning with a clutch disc alignment tool to ensure the center of the clutch disc is aligned with the center of the flywheel, avoiding starting jitter caused by installation deviation.
III. Model-Specific Taboos and Requirements
Changan Model Precautions
Integrated release bearing (integrated with the slave cylinder): Do not force disassembly. If the slave cylinder leaks oil or the bearing jams, replace the entire assembly (to avoid seal failure after disassembly).
Hydraulic system bleeding: Bleeding is mandatory after installation (procedure: loosen the bleed screw → press the pedal 3-5 times → keep the pedal fully depressed → tighten the bleed screw → release the pedal) until brake fluid flows out without bubbles. Otherwise, it will cause a soft pedal and incomplete disengagement.
Some older Changan Benben models (mechanical clutch): The release bearing and release sleeve adopt a clearance fit. After installation, check the bearing's axial play (normal value ≤1mm); replace the sleeve if the play is excessive.
