Installation Method of 12V Generator
Preparation Work
Turn off the vehicle engine and disconnect the negative cable of the storage battery to prevent short circuit.
Prepare tools: socket wrench, torque wrench, special tool for belt tensioner, cleaning cloth, etc.
Clean the generator mounting bracket and bolt holes to remove oil stains and rust. Check the appearance and model compatibility of the new generator.
Generator Positioning and Preliminary Fixing
Place the new generator into the mounting bracket and align the upper and lower mounting holes.
First insert the lower fixing bolt and screw it by hand until it is half-tight; then install the upper fixing bolt and also screw it by hand for preliminary fixing, without final tightening for the time being.
Electrical Circuit Connection
Connect the B+ terminal (thick cable) of the generator, put on the insulating shield, and tighten the nut to 10N·m (88.5in·lbs) with a torque wrench.
Plug in the generator wiring harness connector until a "click" sound is heard to confirm locking. Check that the wiring harness is free of distortion and interference.
Accessory Drive Belt Installation
Use the belt tensioner tool to press the tension pulley, and fit the belt onto the generator pulley and each auxiliary pulley according to the original routing direction.
Slowly release the tensioner to ensure the belt is fully seated in the grooves without deviation or distortion.
Final Bolt Tightening and Component Resetting
Tighten the upper and lower fixing bolts of the generator to 54N·m (40ft·lbs) with a torque wrench.
If the engine right mount, idler pulley, etc., have been removed, reset and tighten them in accordance with specifications (the torque of the idler pulley bolt is about 50N·m).
Refit the engine decorative cover and clean up the tools and working site.
Finalization and Verification
Reconnect the negative cable of the storage battery and start the vehicle.
Check that the charging indicator light goes out. Use a multimeter to measure the generator output voltage at idle speed; the normal range is 13.5–14.8V.
Listen for no abnormal noise, and observe that the belt runs smoothly without slipping or abnormal sound.
Precautions for Installation of 12V Generator on Dodge Journey & Fiat Freemont
Electrical Safety Operations
Disconnect the negative cable of the storage battery throughout the entire installation process to prevent short circuits during wiring, which could damage precision electrical components such as the generator rectifier and vehicle ECU. Before reconnecting the negative cable, recheck that all wire connectors are tight and free of grounding faults.
An insulating shield must be fitted over the thick cable connected to the generator's B+ terminal. Ensure no metal parts are exposed after tightening, so as to avoid short circuits caused by friction with metal components in the engine compartment while driving.
Fully insert the wiring harness connector into the slot and confirm that the locking clip engages with a click. This prevents connector loosening due to vehicle vibration, which would result in power generation interruption or electrical faults.
Mechanical Installation Specifications
Tighten the fixing bolts in the sequence of "pre-tightening first, final tightening later". Never fully tighten the bolts in one single step, as this may cause misalignment of the generator and uneven stress on the drive belt.
Strictly comply with the torque specifications: tighten the B+ terminal nut to 10N·m, the upper and lower generator fixing bolts to 54N·m, and the idler pulley bolt to approximately 50N·m. Insufficient torque will lead to loosening and abnormal noise; excessive torque may cause bolt thread damage or bracket deformation.
When installing the drive belt, use a special belt tensioner tool to press the tension pulley. Ensure the belt fully seats in the pulley grooves. Do not pry the belt into place with hard tools such as screwdrivers, as this can damage the rubber fibers of the belt and shorten its service life.
Accessory Compatibility and Inspection
Verify the generator model before installation to ensure its power rating and interface type match those of the original equipment. This installation guide applies to 2.4L/3.6L models produced between 2011 and 2020. Mismatched models will cause abnormal output voltage.
If replacing the drive belt at the same time, inspect the bearings of the tension pulley and idler pulley: they should rotate smoothly without jamming, abnormal noise or radial looseness. Replace any defective pulleys to prevent premature wear of the new belt.
Clean the generator mounting bracket and bolt holes to remove oil stains and rust. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound if necessary, to facilitate disassembly during future maintenance.
Post-installation Verification Points
After starting the vehicle, check that the charging indicator light on the dashboard turns off. If the light remains on, stop the engine immediately and inspect the wiring connections or check for generator malfunctions.
Use a multimeter to measure the generator output voltage at idle speed; the normal range is 13.5–14.8V. Excessively high voltage will damage the battery and electrical appliances, while insufficient voltage will fail to charge the battery.
Listen for abnormal noises (such as squealing or rattling) in the generator and belt area when the engine is idling and accelerating. Observe that the belt runs smoothly without slipping or shaking.
Prohibited Operations
Do not unplug the generator wiring harness connector or disconnect the battery cable while the engine is running, as this may generate instantaneous high voltage and damage the generator and vehicle electrical system.
After installing the generator, ensure that there is sufficient clearance between the generator and surrounding components (such as water pipes, oil pipes and wiring harnesses). Avoid contact or friction, which may cause component wear and subsequent faults during vehicle operation.

- Original Factory Service ManualThe content is based on the chapter of engine accessory system (generator) disassembly and assembly in the original factory service manual for 2011–2020 Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont models equipped with 2.4L/3.6L engines. It covers electrical safety operation specifications, bolt torque standards (e.g., 54N·m for generator fixing bolts, 10N·m for B+ terminal nuts, etc.), belt installation requirements, and post-installation verification procedures.
- Technical Specifications for Platform-shared ModelsThese two models are developed on the same platform and share the same engine accessory system design. Relevant installation constraints and safety warnings (such as disconnecting the battery negative cable throughout the installation process, prohibiting prying to install the belt, etc.) are all referenced from the general maintenance technical specifications for platform-shared models of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).
- General Installation Standards for Automotive GeneratorsCombined with the general installation procedures of the automotive generator industry, this document supplements content such as accessory compatibility inspection, tensioner/idler pulley condition detection, and voltage testing standards (13.5–14.8V), which are applicable to the general operation requirements of the automotive maintenance industry.
- Summary of Industry Maintenance PracticesSome details (such as wiring harness anti-interference measures, the sequence of bolt pre-tightening and final tightening) are derived from the practical experience of the automotive maintenance industry in generator installation for such models, aiming to avoid common fault risks (e.g., bolt thread damage, abnormal belt wear, etc.).
