Installation Method for HOWO Truck 28V 55A Alternator (OEM Specification Version)
I. Preparation (Mandatory)
1. Tools and Parts
Socket/wrench set: 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 22mm (core sizes)
Torque wrench (accuracy ±5%), special belt tensioner tool, soft pry bar
Insulated gloves, marker pen, multimeter, rust remover, high-temperature grease (NLGI Grade 2)
New alternator (28V 55A; verify pulley, mounting feet, B+ terminal, and field plug match the original)
New mounting bolts (replace if old bolts are rusted or thread-stripped), flat washers + spring washers
Vehicle lift + safety stands, wheel chocks, electrical tape, safety goggles
2. Safety and Vehicle Preparation
Park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine, apply the parking brake, and shift to neutral. Install wheel chocks.
Disconnect the 24V battery negative terminal and wait ≥5 minutes to discharge residual voltage (prevents short circuits and damage to ECU/alternator regulator).
Lift the vehicle and secure with safety stands; remove the engine undertray and right-side trim panel.
Mark and photograph the routing of the alternator drive belt to avoid incorrect installation.
Mark the alternator wiring harness routing and record the positions of the B+ main cable, field plug, and ground cable.
II. Removal of Old Alternator (Reverse Procedure)
1. Remove the Drive Belt
Use the special belt tensioner tool to press the tensioner and release belt tension.
Remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley and store it properly to avoid oil contamination.
2. Disconnect Electrical Connections (DO NOT work with power on)
Unplug the alternator field control plug (press the locking tab to ensure full separation).
Use a 19mm wrench to remove the B+ main power cable nut, take off the cable, and immediately wrap the terminal with electrical tape to prevent short circuits.
Disconnect the alternator ground cable and sensor wiring harness, and mark them clearly.
3. Remove Mounting Bolts
The HOWO alternator is typically secured with 2–3 M14/M16 mounting bolts (on the engine side bracket; use a 17/19mm socket).
Loosen the bolts gradually in diagonal order; do not fully loosen at once.
Support the alternator, rock it gently to separate it from the engine, and remove the old unit (tap lightly if space is limited; do not pull forcibly).
III. Installation of New Alternator (Key Steps)
1. Positioning and Mounting (Critical Torque)
Clean the alternator bracket/engine mounting surface to remove oil and rust, ensuring a flat fit.
Apply a thin layer of high-temperature grease to the alternator bearing and pulley shaft.
Align the new alternator with the mounting holes and thread the mounting bolts in by hand (ensure smooth threading).
Tighten the bolts gradually in diagonal order, strictly following OEM torque:
Mounting bolts: 55–60 N·m (commercial vehicle standard)
Rock the alternator gently to confirm no looseness or abnormal noise.
2. Electrical Connections (Prevent Short Circuits / Poor Connections)
Connect the field control plug first; ensure the lock clicks into place.
Install the B+ main power cable: clean the terminal, install a flat washer + spring washer, and tighten the nut with a 19mm wrench. Torque: 12–15 N·m.
Install the ground cable and sensor wiring harness, reinstall per markings, and ensure no looseness.
Inspect all wiring harnesses: keep away from high-temperature/moving components (exhaust pipe, turbocharger, half-shaft, etc.) with no interference or pulling.
3. Install the Drive Belt
Route the belt onto the alternator pulley, crankshaft pulley, and tensioner in the marked direction.
Use the special tool to press the tensioner, seat the belt fully into the pulleys, then release the tensioner.
Rotate the crankshaft manually 2–3 times and check that the belt runs straight with no binding. Belt deflection should be 8–10 mm (commercial vehicle standard).
4. Reassembly and Final Steps
Reinstall the engine undertray and right-side trim panel.
Reconnect the 24V battery negative terminal.
IV. Inspection and Commissioning (Mandatory)
1. Static Inspection
Visually check all bolts, wiring harnesses, and belt to confirm proper installation and no looseness.
Check that the belt is free of oil and cracks, with proper tension.
2. Startup Test
Turn on the ignition; the dashboard charging indicator light should illuminate.
Start the engine; the alternator should run smoothly with no abnormal noise, and the charging light should turn off immediately.
At idle and during acceleration, the alternator should show no slipping or unusual noise.
3. Electrical Inspection
Measure the alternator output voltage with a multimeter: 27.5–28.8V (standard for 28V systems).
Accelerate to 2000 rpm; voltage should remain stable at 28.0–28.8V with no large fluctuations.
Check the B+ terminal and wiring harness for overheating, burning, or unusual odors.
4. Load Test
Turn on high-power electrical devices: headlights, A/C, blower motor, driving recorder, etc.
Voltage should remain ≥27.0V, with no overloading noise from the alternator, and the charging system should function normally.
Installation Precautions for HOWO Truck 28V 55A Alternator (Complete Detailed Version)
I. Safety & Power Disconnection Specifications (Top Priority)
Turn off the engine → apply parking brake → shift to neutral → disconnect the battery negative terminal, and wait ≥5 minutes before starting work.
The alternator B+ terminal is a constant-live high-current terminal. Operating without disconnecting power can easily cause short circuits, wire burning, fuse failure, and damage to the ECU or alternator regulator.
All work must be performed only after complete power disconnection. Otherwise, it will directly burn the alternator, damage the control module, and cause wiring fire.
Wrap the cable end tightly with electrical tape right after removal.
Strictly prohibit grounding, contact with any metal components, or friction with other wiring harnesses.
Use heavy-duty safety stands when lifting the vehicle; never rely solely on a jack.
Keep away from high-temperature/moving components (exhaust pipe, pulleys, fan, drive shaft, steering and hydraulic lines, etc.) to prevent burns, pinches, and crush injuries.
II. Precautions for Removing the Old Alternator
The HOWO heavy-duty truck engine compartment is compact with dense belts and wiring. Incorrect installation may cause belt misalignment, breakage, or wiring chafing and short circuits.
Do not pry, force, or strike the belt tensioner, to avoid tensioner breakage, bearing damage, or belt tearing.
After releasing tension, remove the belt smoothly; avoid twisting or oil contamination.
If bolts are rusted, spray rust remover and wait 5–10 minutes before loosening.
Strictly forbid forced twisting, aggressive impact wrench use, or excessive breaker bar force to avoid thread stripping, bolt breakage, engine bracket damage, or housing cracking.
Support or pry only the alternator main housing or mounting feet.
Do not pry on terminals, connectors, regulator, or cooling fan areas, to avoid internal damage or total failure.
Avoid dropping and damaging the engine mount, oil pan, water pipes, vacuum hoses, wiring harnesses, or compressor to prevent major secondary damage.
The field plug and signal plugs are similar in shape. Incorrect connection will result in no charging, blown fuses, or illuminated warning lights.
III. Pre‑Installation Inspection of the New Alternator (Mandatory)
28V 55A. Mounting foot position, pulley type, B+ terminal position, connector shape, and mounting hole spacing must be completely identical to the original.
No bumps, cracks, oil leaks, water intrusion, rust, or deformation.
Pulley must be free of looseness, play, or damage.
Rotate the pulley by hand; it should turn smoothly with no noise, binding, or excessive play.
B+ terminal and field plug must be free of oxidation, deformation, looseness, or burning marks.
If any abnormality is found in appearance, bearings, or terminals, replace it immediately. Do not install a defective unit.
