Installation Method for Audi 12V 90A Alternator
Preparations
Park the vehicle on a flat surface and wait for the engine to cool down completely after turning it off. Disconnect the negative cable of the storage battery. If the vehicle's radio is equipped with an anti-theft code, record it in advance to prevent the device from being locked after power failure. Prepare tools such as sockets and a torque wrench. Meanwhile, check whether the pulley of the new alternator rotates smoothly and clean the dust and oil stains in the installation area.
Pre-installation and Positioning of the Alternator
Place the new alternator stably on the mounting bracket, and slightly adjust its position to align the fixing bolt holes accurately with those on the engine bracket. Screw on the fixing bolts but do not tighten them fully, leaving sufficient space for adjusting the belt tension later. For models equipped with an idler pulley, pull the idler pulley outward first to facilitate subsequent belt winding.
Assembly of Key Internal Components (for Overhaul Scenarios)
If the alternator needs to be disassembled and overhauled, first install the rotor and place it back in position, then install the stator and silicon rectifier assembly. Tighten the fixing screws and nuts of the stator coil connectors, and fit the protective cover of the silicon rectifier assembly on the rear end cover. When installing the carbon brushes, sleeve the wire connectors of the carbon brushes onto the corresponding screws, mount the carbon brush holder with insulating washers and spring washers properly installed, and fix them with nuts. After installation, use a multimeter to test the resistance between the F terminal and the alternator housing to ensure it shows an infinite value.
Connection of Electrical Circuits
Locate the positive terminal and circuit connector of the alternator. First, fix the wiring of the positive terminal and tighten the nut to the specified torque. Then insert the circuit connector smoothly and confirm that the buckle is securely engaged. If there is a grounding wire, connect it firmly to the designated grounding point to avoid poor contact.
Installation and Adjustment of the Drive Belt
Fit the drive belt around the alternator pulley and idler pulley according to the routing path marked in the engine compartment. Use a tool to adjust the belt tensioner to achieve appropriate belt tension; pressing the middle of the belt should result in a sag of 1 - 2 centimeters. Before installation, pull the main shaft of the alternator outward to facilitate accurate winding of the belt.
Fastening and Re-inspection
Use a torque wrench to tighten the alternator fixing bolts in accordance with Audi's vehicle specifications. If components such as the water pipe fixing screws were removed earlier, reinstall and fasten them back to their original positions. Finally, reconnect the negative cable of the storage battery, start the vehicle, check that the voltage is above 13V, and observe that there are no abnormal noises during operation.
Installation Method for Mercedes-Benz 12V 90A Alternator
Preparations
Park the vehicle securely and let the engine cool down. Open the hood and prop it up with the hood support. Locate the storage battery (in some models, it is placed in the trunk or under the seat) and disconnect its negative cable. Prepare tools including a 14mm wrench, sockets, and a belt tensioner tool. Meanwhile, record the routing path of the serpentine belt in the engine compartment or refer to the belt routing diagram inside the hood.
Pre-installation and Positioning of the Alternator
Slide the new alternator into the installation position. First, install the long bolt and fix it tentatively, then attach the top bolt and bracket of the alternator. Do not fully tighten these bolts to the final torque at this stage to allow for fine adjustments later.
Connection of Electrical Circuits
Find the positive terminal and electrical connector on the back of the alternator. First, fix and tighten the wiring on the positive terminal, then align the electrical connector with the interface and insert it firmly until it clicks into place. Avoid incorrect wiring to prevent malfunctions in the electrical system.
Installation of the Drive Belt
Fit the new serpentine belt around the alternator pulley and other corresponding pulleys according to the previously recorded path or the marked diagram. Use a socket wrench to turn the tensioner, ensuring the belt fits fully into the grooves of the pulleys. Release the tensioner after adjustment to confirm the belt is not loose.
Fastening and Inspection
Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts in accordance with specifications: fasten the long bolt to a torque of 33 pound-feet and the top bracket bolt to 16 pound-feet. Reconnect the negative cable of the storage battery. After starting the vehicle, use a multimeter to test the voltage; the normal range should be between 14.0V and 14.7V. Meanwhile, observe that the belt operates smoothly without any abnormalities.
