Installation Method for 12V 90A Generator of Toyota Corolla Axio
I. Pre-installation Preparation
Tool Preparation
Basic Tools: Socket wrenches (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm), Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, combination pliers, extension bar.
Protective Tools: Insulated gloves, safety goggles, anti-slip gloves.
Auxiliary Materials: Rust remover, thread-locking adhesive, generator mounting bolt washers, electrical insulation tape.
Vehicle and Component Inspection
Park the vehicle on level ground, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable (to prevent short circuits during installation).
Inspect the appearance of the new generator: Ensure the rectifier, stator windings, and pulley are free from damage or deformation, and the terminals are not oxidized or rusted.
Clean oil stains and dust from the generator mounting position in the engine compartment, and spray rust remover on the threads of aged bolts.
II. Removal of the Old Generator (if replacing)
Loosen the generator drive belt: Locate the belt tensioner, use a wrench to pry the tensioner to release tension, then remove the drive belt.
Disconnect electrical connections: Unplug the voltage regulator connector from the rear of the generator in sequence, loosen the fixing nut of the output terminal (B+ terminal), and remove the cable (mark the cable to avoid reverse connection during reinstallation).
Remove mounting bolts: First loosen the adjustment-side bolt of the generator, then remove the fixed-side bolt, and take out the old generator.
III. Installation Steps for the New Generator
Positioning and Placement
Install the Drive Belt
Tighten the Mounting Bolts
Use a torque wrench to tighten the fixed-side bolt to the original factory standard torque (usually 22–28N·m, refer to the vehicle maintenance manual for the exact value).
Adjust the position of the generator to ensure the belt tension meets the requirement (press the middle section of the belt; the deflection should be approximately 5–10mm), then tighten the adjustment-side bolt to a torque of 18–24N·m.
Restore Electrical Connections
Connect the battery cable to the generator B+ terminal, install the washer and tighten the nut to a torque of 8–12N·m to ensure the connection is secure without loosening.
Plug the voltage regulator connector back in and confirm that the connector clip is locked to prevent poor contact.
Reconnect the Battery
IV. Post-installation Inspection and Testing
Idle Speed Test
Voltage Detection
Load Test
Precautions for Installation of 12V 90A Generator of Toyota Corolla Axio
Electrical Safety Protection
The negative battery cable must be disconnected throughout the entire installation process to prevent short circuits caused by tools touching the generator terminals or vehicle electronic control circuits, which could damage the generator, fuses or engine control unit (ECU).
When connecting the cable to the B+ terminal, ensure that the washer is properly installed and tighten the nut to a torque of 8–12N·m. This prevents terminal loosening, overheating and oxidation, as well as thread stripping due to over-tightening.
Fully insert the voltage regulator connector and secure the locking clip. Never pull the connector wiring harness forcibly to avoid internal pin breakage or poor contact.
Mechanical Installation Specifications
Tighten the generator mounting bolts in the sequence of fixed-side first, then adjustment-side. The torque for the fixed-side bolt is 22–28N·m and for the adjustment-side bolt is 18–24N·m. Excessive torque may cause bracket deformation, while insufficient torque will lead to vibration and abnormal noise during generator operation.
Clean oil stains from the pulley grooves before installing the drive belt. Follow the belt routing diagram in the engine compartment strictly to avoid belt wear or abnormal generator load caused by incorrect routing.
Precisely control the belt tension: Press the middle section of the belt with a force of approximately 10kgf; the deflection should be kept within 5–10mm. Excessive slack will cause slipping and burning odour, while excessive tension will accelerate the aging of generator bearings and water pump bearings.
Component Matching and Inspection
Before installation, reconfirm that the generator specifications are 12V 90A and that the model matches the original accessories of Toyota Corolla Axio to avoid charging system malfunctions due to mismatched power ratings.
Inspect the new generator’s rectifier, stator windings and pulley for damage, deformation or rust. Replace the generator immediately if any defects are found, and never install non-conforming components.
