Installation Method for Cummins 24V Starter
Pre-installation Preparation
Safety and Tool Preparation
Component Inspection and Cleaning
Reassembly of Internal Starter Components
Apply a small amount of grease to friction points such as bushings and armature journals. Slide the intermediate support plate, overrunning clutch, and retaining ring back onto the rotor shaft, then install the shaft end lock ring.
Fit the shift fork into the shift fork sleeve of the overrunning clutch, then insert the rotor (with associated components) into the drive end cover and tighten the intermediate support plate screws.
Install a thrust washer on the commutator end shaft of the rotor. Align the alignment marks on the stator and brush end cover, slide the rotor into place, and tighten the through bolts.
Install the brushes: grind the contact surface of brushes with insulating sleeves, insert them into the corresponding insulated brush holders, and finally attach the dust cover.
Assembly of Solenoid Switch
Assemble the armature as required, pull it by hand to confirm secure installation. After ensuring the armature pull rod is correctly connected to the shift fork, fit the solenoid switch tightly against the drive end cover and tighten the fixing screws.
Reattach the connecting copper plate to the terminals of the solenoid switch and motor, and tighten the terminal nuts to prevent loose connections.
Fixing the Entire Unit to the Engine
Gap Adjustment
Use a tool to toggle the drive gear and ensure smooth rotation without jamming.
Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the drive gear end face and the limit ring; adjust by rotating the connecting rod if the gap does not meet specifications.
Push the armature fully home and ensure the gap between the drive gear and lock nut is 1.5 - 2.5mm. If not, adjust the adjusting screw on the starter and lock the nut.
If the armature axial gap is abnormal, correct it by adding or removing shims on the front and rear end covers of the shaft.
Power-on Testing
Core Precautions for Installing Cummins 24V Starter
I. Bottom Line for Safe Operation
Adhere to "power-off operation" throughout the process. Disconnect the negative terminal of the storage battery before installation and do not reconnect it until wiring is fully completed to prevent short circuits and sparks.
Wear insulating gloves and goggles to avoid electric shock when touching metal terminals, or scratches from oil stains and component debris.
Do not strike the starter housing, drive gear, or solenoid switch with hard objects such as hammers, as this may easily damage internal coils and deform gears.
II. Component Compatibility and Cleaning
Confirm that the starter model is fully compatible with the engine, and ensure the flywheel ring gear teeth are free of severe wear—otherwise, meshing failure may occur.
Allow cleaned components to dry completely before assembly. Keep insulating parts (e.g., brush holders, terminals) free of grease to prevent insulation failure.
Use replacement parts of the same specification when replacing components. Brushes must be replaced if wear exceeds 1/3 of their original height to avoid poor contact.
III. Key Assembly Requirements
Apply thread lock to the fixing bolts and tighten them to the engine’s specified torque (typically 40-50N・m, subject to the model manual) to prevent loosening and resonance during operation.
Ensure gap adjustments meet standards. Improper meshing gap between the drive gear and flywheel ring gear, or abnormal armature axial gap, can cause gear impact or operational jamming.
Distinguish between positive and negative poles when connecting wires. Securely fasten the connections between the solenoid switch terminals, storage battery positive pole, and starter relay to avoid poor contact and overheating.
IV. Testing and Follow-up Inspection
The initial power-on test should not exceed 5 seconds. If startup fails, wait 1-2 minutes before retrying to prevent overheating and burnout of the starter coil.
During testing, check for abnormal noises and sparks. If gear idling or abnormal meshing noise occurs, disconnect power immediately to inspect gaps or gear conditions.
Monitor the starter’s operating status in the short term after installation. If weak startup or housing overheating is observed, troubleshoot for poor wiring contact or improper component assembly.
