Installation Method for 24V 9KW Starter of Shangchai 6114 Engine
I. Pre-installation Preparation
Tool Preparation
Special tools: Torque wrench (range 0–300N·m), socket wrench (matched with starter fixing bolts), Phillips screwdriver, wiring terminal crimping tool.
Auxiliary tools: Cleaning cloth, copper wire brush, thread lock agent (medium-strength anaerobic type is recommended), engine-specific lubricating grease.
Parts and Material Inspection
Verify the starter model: Confirm its compatibility with the Shangchai 6114 engine. Check that the starter has no cracks on the surface and no corrosion on the terminals.
Inspect matching parts: Ensure that the drive gear, shift fork, fixing bolts, gaskets, wiring terminals and insulating sleeves are complete and undamaged.
Cleaning work: Clean the starter mounting surface on the engine flywheel housing to remove oil stains, rust and sealant residues; clean the threads of the bolt holes with a copper wire brush.
Safety Protection
Disconnect the negative cable of the vehicle battery to prevent short circuit during installation.
If the engine is installed on the complete machine, ensure the vehicle is in the parking state and the handbrake is pulled up.
II. Installation Steps
Pre-install the Drive Gear Assembly
Check the flexibility of the starter drive gear. Apply a small amount of engine-specific lubricating grease on the gear shaft to avoid jamming.
Confirm that the connecting pin shaft between the shift fork and the solenoid switch is installed in place without looseness.
Starter Positioning and Fixing
Slowly attach the starter to the mounting surface of the engine flywheel housing, ensuring that the meshing clearance between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear meets the requirement (Shangchai 6114 original factory standard: meshing clearance 0.5–1.5mm).
Insert the two main fixing bolts and matching gaskets. Screw the bolts in by hand until they fit snugly; do not tighten them directly to prevent deviation of the starter installation position.
Use a torque wrench to tighten the fixing bolts in a cross-symmetrical sequence. The torque value shall strictly comply with the requirements of the Shangchai 6114 technical manual (recommended torque: 85–100N·m).
If the starter is equipped with a positioning pin, install the positioning pin first before tightening the fixing bolts to ensure installation coaxiality.
Electrical Circuit Connection
Main power cable connection: Connect the thick positive cable of the vehicle battery (cross-sectional area ≥35mm²) to the main terminal (marked with “+” or “B+”) of the starter. Install flat washers and spring washers, crimp the wiring terminal with a terminal crimping tool, tighten the nut (torque value: 35–45N·m), and put on the insulating sleeve.
Control circuit connection: Connect the control terminal of the solenoid switch (marked with “S” or “50”) to the control wire of the vehicle starting relay. The wiring terminal shall be crimped tightly to prevent heating caused by poor contact.
Grounding check: Ensure reliable grounding between the starter housing and the engine body. If the grounding is poor, install a dedicated grounding cable.
Reconnect the Battery and Conduct Preliminary Test
Connect the negative cable of the vehicle battery, and check that all wiring points are free from looseness and short-circuit risks.
Conduct a short-time no-load test: Turn on the ignition switch to the starting gear. The starter shall run smoothly without abnormal noise during meshing of the drive gear. The single starting time shall not exceed 5s, and disconnect immediately after the test.
If there is gear tooth knocking, weak running and other conditions, cut off the power supply immediately to troubleshoot the fault.
III. Post-installation Inspection and Acceptance
Mechanical Inspection
Recheck whether the torque of the fixing bolts meets the standard without looseness; there shall be no gap between the starter and the mounting surface of the flywheel housing.
Manually rotate the engine crankshaft (by means of the crankshaft pulley) to check the meshing state of the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear without jamming.
Electrical Inspection
Measure the voltage drop of the starter during starting: The voltage at the main terminal during starting shall not be lower than 21V (24V system). If the voltage drop is too large, check the cable cross-sectional area or contact resistance.
Check that there is no heating or smoking at the wiring points, and the insulating sleeve is not damaged.
Load Test
Start the engine 2–3 times continuously (interval ≥30s each time). The starter shall reliably drive the engine to run, and the drive gear shall return smoothly after starting.

Precautions for Installation of 24V 9KW Starter for Shangchai 6114 Engine
Electrical Safety Operation
Disconnect the negative cable of the vehicle battery throughout the entire installation process. Live-operation is prohibited to prevent the solenoid switch from pulling in by mistake, which may lead to gear tooth knocking, circuit short circuit and fire.
Flat washers and spring washers must be installed on the main power terminal (B+). After tightening, put on the insulating sleeve to avoid short circuit caused by contact with the engine body and metal components.
The terminals of the control circuit must be crimped tightly. Poor contact is strictly prohibited, otherwise it will lead to weak starter operation and frequent ablation of the solenoid switch.
Mechanical Installation Accuracy Requirements
The mounting surface of the starter and the fitting surface of the flywheel housing must be clean without oil stains and rust. If necessary, apply a thin layer of sealant (only on the edge of the fitting surface, to prevent sealant from entering the gear meshing area).
Tighten the fixing bolts step by step in a cross-symmetrical sequence. Never tighten the bolts on one side at a time, so as to prevent deformation of the starter housing and avoid affecting the meshing accuracy of the drive gear and flywheel ring gear.
The meshing clearance must be controlled within 0.5–1.5mm (Shangchai 6114 original factory standard). Excessive clearance may cause abnormal tooth knocking noise, while insufficient clearance will prevent the gear from returning to position. The clearance can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the mounting gaskets.
The use of non-standard fixing bolts is strictly prohibited. The bolt torque must be strictly controlled within 85–100N·m. Insufficient torque will cause looseness and falling off, while excessive torque will lead to bolt fracture or housing cracking.
Pre-installation and Testing Taboos
When pre-installing the drive gear, only apply a small amount of engine-specific lubricating grease. Never use butter, engine oil or other substitutes to prevent grease carbonization at high temperatures, which may block the gear shaft.
The duration of a single no-load test shall not exceed 5s, and the interval between consecutive tests must be ≥30s to avoid overheating and burning of the starter armature.
During the load test, if the starter idles, gear tooth knocking or weak running occurs, cut off the power supply immediately for troubleshooting. Forced repeated starting is prohibited.
