Installation Process of 12V 1.4KW Starter for Chery and Great Wall Vehicles
Pre-installation Preparation
First, check the model of the new starter to confirm that it is a 12V 1.4KW specification suitable for the corresponding Chery or Great Wall vehicle model, and inspect the starter for no external damage and complete components.
Prepare tools such as 10-12mm box-end wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, Phillips screwdrivers, etc. Meanwhile, turn off the vehicle engine and park it on a flat ground, then disconnect the negative cable of the storage battery to avoid short circuit or accidental startup during operation.
Clean the Installation Station
Fix the Starter Main Body
Accurately place the new starter into the installation position, align it with the reserved mounting holes, and insert the fixing bolts.
Tighten the bolts to the specified torque with a torque wrench; the recommended torque for the bolts is generally around 37N·m. Avoid over-tightening, which may damage the threads, or under-tightening, which may cause vibration during startup.
Some Chery and Great Wall vehicle models adopt double-bolt fixation, so the bolts should be tightened gradually in a diagonal sequence to ensure that the starter is closely attached to the mounting surface.
Connect the Electrical Circuits
First, connect the power cable (thick wire) of the starter, which usually corresponds to the terminal marked "30", with the tightening torque of the nut being approximately 9.8N·m.
Then connect the control cable (thin wire, mostly the terminal of the electromagnetic switch), insert it firmly into the plug interface, and avoid reversing the circuit connection.
If the vehicle model is equipped with a wire harness bracket, fix it with bolts at the same time with a torque of about 8.4N·m, and install wire harness clips to organize the circuits and prevent shaking and friction.
Restore Power and Conduct Tests
Reconnect the negative cable of the storage battery and close the terminal cover.
Then turn the vehicle key to test, observe whether the starter can run normally, check for any abnormal noise, and see if the engine can be smoothly cranked to start.
If problems such as weak startup or no response occur, check whether the circuit connections are loose or the starter installation is offset. After troubleshooting and confirming no issues, perform the test again.
Precautions for Installation of 12V 1.4KW Starter for Chery and Great Wall Vehicles
Power-off Operation Shall Be Implemented Throughout the Process
Requirements for Cleaning and Fitting of the Mounting Surface
Specifications for Bolt Tightening
Tighten the fixing bolts gradually in a diagonal sequence, with the torque strictly controlled within the range of 35–40N·m. Over-tightening (which may cause housing cracking) or under-tightening (which may lead to loosening and displacement during startup) is not allowed.
If the bolts are stripped or deformed, replace them with high-strength bolts of the same specification immediately. The use of ordinary bolts as substitutes is prohibited.
Taboos for Electrical Circuit Connection
The power cable (thick wire) shall be connected to the "30" terminal of the starter, and the control cable (thin wire) shall be connected to the "50" terminal. Reversing the positive and negative connections is strictly prohibited, otherwise it will burn out the electromagnetic switch or internal windings.
The tightening torque of the wiring nuts shall be controlled within 8–10N·m. After connection, wrap the exposed terminals with insulating tape to prevent short circuits caused by friction between the shaking wire harness and engine components.
The wire harness shall be fixed with original factory clips, and kept away from high-temperature components such as exhaust pipes to prevent aging and cracking of the wires.
Prohibition of Violent Operation in Mechanical Assembly
When meshing the starter with the flywheel ring gear, if alignment is difficult, rotate the crankshaft to adjust the flywheel position. It is strictly prohibited to strike the starter housing or gears to prevent deformation of the overrunning clutch and armature shaft.
During installation, check whether the travel of the shift fork is normal to ensure that the overrunning clutch can be smoothly pushed out for meshing when powered on and fully reset when powered off.
Requirements for Component Protection and Cleaning
If precision components such as the armature and stator windings are contaminated with oil stains, wipe them only with gasoline-dampened cotton yarn; do not wash them with water or rinse them directly with high-pressure cleaning agents to prevent damage to the insulating layer.
After installation, check whether the dust cover is intact to prevent sediment and oil stains from entering the starter interior, which may cause bearing wear or winding short circuits.
Safety Specifications for the Testing Stage
During the initial power-on test, turn the key briefly (single power-on duration shall not exceed 3 seconds), and observe the operation status of the starter: no abnormal noise, no jamming, and the engine can be cranked to start smoothly.
If idling occurs without meshing with the engine, it is mostly due to improper adjustment of the shift fork or a fault in the overrunning clutch. If jamming occurs after meshing, check whether the ring gear has broken teeth or whether the installation angle of the starter is offset.
If a burnt smell is detected or smoke is observed during the test, cut off the power supply immediately, troubleshoot the circuit connections or internal faults of the starter, and repeated testing is prohibited.
