General Installation Method for 12V/24V Starter Motors of Scania Diesel Vehicles and Ursus Tractors
I. Pre-installation Preparation
1. Tool and Material Preparation
Special Tools: Socket wrench set (common sizes 10–19mm), torque wrench, Phillips/flathead screwdriver, wire crimping tool, insulating tape/heat shrink tubing.
Auxiliary Materials: Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) mounting bolts (grade 8.8 or higher high-strength bolts), flat washers, spring washers, conductive paste, medium-strength threadlocker (e.g., Loctite 243).
Safety Protection: Disconnect the negative cable of the vehicle battery, wear gloves and safety goggles, and clean oil stains in the engine compartment installation area.
2. Compatibility Check Between Starter Motor and Original Vehicle
Verify the meshing clearance between the starter drive gear and the engine flywheel ring gear (standard clearance: 2–4mm). Excessive clearance may cause gear tooth damage, while insufficient clearance will lead to gear jamming.
Confirm the starter motor voltage rating: Most Scania heavy-duty diesel vehicles adopt a 24V dual-battery system; small Ursus tractors use 12V, and high-power tractors use 24V. Voltage mismatch is strictly prohibited.
II. Installation Steps
(1) Installation of Starter Motor for Scania Diesel Vehicles
- Locate the Installation PositionThe Scania starter motor is mounted on the flywheel housing mounting seat at the lower part of the engine block. First, clean oil stains and rust on the surface of the mounting seat to ensure the fitting surface is flat and free of impurities.
- Pre-install the Starter Motor
Hoist the starter motor to the mounting seat, align the bolt holes, and initially screw in 2–3 mounting bolts (do not fully tighten). Adjust the angle of the starter motor to ensure the axis of the drive gear is parallel to that of the flywheel ring gear.
Check the meshing status of the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear: Manually rotate the crankshaft and observe whether the gears mesh smoothly without jamming or uneven wear.
- Tighten the Mounting BoltsUse a torque wrench to tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence. The standard torque for Scania starter motor mounting bolts is 45–60N·m (refer to the vehicle maintenance manual for specific values). Apply threadlocker to the bolts after tightening to prevent loosening.
- Electrical Wiring Connection
Main Power Connection: Connect the thick cable from the positive terminal of the battery to the main terminal (marked “+” or “B+”) of the starter motor. Install flat washers and spring washers, control the torque within 25–30N·m, and apply conductive paste to the connector to reduce contact resistance.
Control Circuit Connection: Connect the thin wire controlled by the ignition switch to the auxiliary terminal (marked “S” or “50”) of the starter solenoid. Wrap the connector with insulating tape after wiring.
Ground Connection: Ensure the starter motor housing is well-grounded to the engine block. If the grounding is poor, install an additional grounding cable (cross-sectional area not less than 16mm²).
(2) Installation of Starter Motor for Ursus Tractors
- Mounting Seat TreatmentThe Ursus tractor starter motor is installed on the flywheel housing on the side of the engine. The mounting seat of some old models may be deformed, which must be corrected before installation to avoid uneven stress on the starter motor.
- Secure the Starter Motor
Small 12V starter motors are usually fixed with 2 mounting bolts, while 24V high-power starter motors use 3 bolts. Adjust the position during pre-installation to ensure the drive gear can flexibly extend into the flywheel ring gear.
Control the torque within 35–50N·m when tightening the bolts. Since tractors operate under high vibration, spring washers must be installed on the bolts to prevent loosening.
Wiring Connection
24V tractors adopt dual-battery series connection. Ensure the main cable is connected to the positive terminal after series connection of the two batteries to avoid insufficient starter motor power caused by single-battery supply.
The control circuit should be connected to the output terminal of the tractor start switch. The wiring must be securely fastened and kept away from high-temperature engine components (e.g., exhaust pipe).
III. Post-installation Commissioning
- Restore Power SupplyReconnect the negative cable of the battery and check that no tools or debris are left around the starter motor.
- No-load TestTurn on the ignition switch and briefly press the start button (no more than 5 seconds at a time). Observe whether the starter motor runs smoothly without abnormal noise or smoke, and whether the drive gear extends and retracts smoothly.
- Load TestStart the engine and check that there is no gear meshing noise when the starter motor operates. The drive gear must retract quickly after the engine starts. If the engine cranks sluggishly, check for loose cable connectors or insufficient battery voltage.
Installation Precautions for 12V/24V Starter Motors of Scania Diesel Vehicles and Ursus Tractors
I. Core Precautions Before Installation
1. Safe Power-off Operation
The negative cable of the battery must be disconnected first. For Scania 24V models with dual-battery series connection, the negative terminals of both batteries shall be disconnected simultaneously; if the Ursus tractor is equipped with an external power supply, it shall also be cut off to prevent short-circuit sparking during installation.
After power-off, wait for 5–10 minutes to allow residual power in the starter solenoid switch to discharge completely before proceeding with subsequent operations.
2. Compatibility Check Between Model and Starter Motor
Voltage rating mismatch is strictly prohibited: Scania heavy-duty diesel vehicles and Ursus high-power tractors use 24V systems. Installing a 12V starter motor will result in weak cranking and solenoid switch pull-in failure. Small Ursus tractors use 12V systems; installing a 24V starter motor will burn out the coil and damage the flywheel ring gear.
Model matching check: Verify that the number of teeth and module of the starter drive gear match those of the original flywheel ring gear. For Scania, confirm that the starter motor is compatible with the engine model (e.g., DC13, DC16 series). For Ursus, check the starter motor part number corresponding to the tractor model (e.g., U650, U800).
Meshing clearance calibration: Manually push the starter drive gear and check that the clearance with the flywheel ring gear is 2–4mm. Excessive clearance may cause gear tooth damage, while insufficient clearance will lead to gear jamming and failure to retract.
3. Installation Environment and Component Cleaning
Clean oil stains, rust and carbon deposits on the surface of the starter mounting seat. The engine compartment of Scania is compact, so it is necessary to clean the surrounding pipelines and wire harnesses to avoid scratching during installation. Ursus tractors are mostly used in field operations, and the mounting seat is prone to soil contamination, which must be thoroughly blown clean with a high-pressure air gun.
Wipe off any anti-rust oil on the surface of the starter motor to prevent oil from seeping into the solenoid switch.
