Installation Method for IVECO 24V Starter
I. Pre-installation Preparation
1. Tool and Consumable Preparation
Special Tools: 10mm/13mm/16mm socket wrench, torque wrench (range 0–200N·m), Phillips screwdriver, ratchet wrench, terminal crimping tool
Consumables: Original starter mounting bolts, lock washers, copper conductive paste, thread locker (Loctite 243), insulating tape
Protective Equipment: Insulated gloves, safety goggles, anti-slip gloves
2. Safety Specifications (in accordance with ISO 4254-1 Agricultural Machinery Safety Standard)
Disconnect the vehicle's main power switch, remove the negative battery cables (two negative terminals must be disconnected for 24V systems), and let it stand for 5 minutes to discharge residual electricity.
Verify that the starter model matches the vehicle VIN (the original IVECO part number must include the vehicle model code).
Clean oil stains and dust in the installation area to prevent bolt loosening or short circuits after installation.
Do not operate when the engine is hot to avoid scalding.
3. Parts Inspection
Check the new starter for no external damage; the drive gear should move freely without jamming.
Verify the specifications of starter terminals (main terminal M8/M10, field terminal M4/M5).
Ensure the supporting bolts have a strength grade of ≥8.8, complying with IVECO original factory standards.
II. Installation Steps
1. Starter Positioning
Orient the drive end of the starter toward the engine flywheel housing, align it with the mounting holes, and manually screw in 2 positioning bolts (do not tighten fully).
Adjust the starter angle to ensure the meshing clearance between the drive gear and flywheel ring gear is 2.5–4.0mm (IVECO original factory standard value).
Confirm that the starter fits tightly against the flywheel housing with no warping or gaps.
2. Bolt Tightening (Key Torque Parameters)
Use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts in diagonal sequence to a torque of 45–50N·m (in accordance with the IVECO Maintenance Manual).
Apply thread locker to the bolt heads and install lock washers to prevent loosening due to vehicle vibration during operation.
After tightening, recheck the starter position to ensure no displacement or looseness.
3. Electrical Wiring Connection
Main Power Connection: Connect the positive battery cable to the starter main terminal (marked "+"), install flat washers and spring washers, and tighten to a torque of 20–25N·m.
Field Circuit Connection: Connect the solenoid control wire (thin wire) to the auxiliary terminal, tighten to a torque of 5–8N·m, and apply conductive paste to the terminal to reduce contact resistance.
Wiring Arrangement: Secure the wiring harness to the engine wiring bracket with cable ties. Avoid contact with high-temperature engine components (exhaust pipe, cylinder block) and reserve a heat dissipation gap of ≥50mm.
4. Battery Reconnection
Reconnect the negative cables of the two 24V batteries and tighten the fixing nuts to a torque of 10–12N·m.
Close the main power switch and check that the vehicle electrical system shows no abnormal alarms.
III. Post-installation Testing
1. No-load Test
Ensure the vehicle is in neutral (manual transmission) or Park (P, automatic transmission), and pull the handbrake firmly.
Turn the ignition switch to the "START" position; the starter should run smoothly with no abnormal noise or jamming.
Single starting duration ≤5 seconds; interval between two starts ≥15 seconds (to prevent starter overheating).
Observe the meshing condition of the drive gear; no gear grinding or whistling is allowed.
2. Load Test
Start the engine and let it idle for 3–5 minutes; check that the starter installation area has no leaks or abnormal vibration.
After turning off the engine, start it 2–3 more times to confirm stable starting performance.
Check that electrical terminals show no overheating or unusual odors.
Core Precautions for Installation of IVECO 24V Starter
I. Safe Operation Precautions
1. Power-off Operation Specifications
Must disconnect the vehicle's main power switch, remove the negative cables of the two batteries in the 24V system, and let it stand for 5 minutes to discharge residual electricity. Live operation is strictly prohibited.
Wear insulated gloves and safety goggles throughout the operation. Avoid metal tools touching both the starter main terminal and the vehicle body at the same time to prevent burns caused by short-circuit sparks.
Do not perform installation when the engine is hot (within 1 hour after shutdown). High-temperature components such as the exhaust pipe are likely to cause scalds.
2. Parts Safety Verification
The new starter model must match the vehicle VIN. Check the vehicle model code in the original part number to eliminate electrical faults caused by incorrect installation.
The strength grade of the mounting bolts shall be ≥ 8.8. Non-standard bolts are prohibited to prevent fracture due to vibration.
Check that the starter drive gear is free of rust and jamming, and the solenoid switch moves smoothly without sticking.
3. Test Safety Requirements
During no-load test, the vehicle must be put in neutral (manual transmission) or Park (P, automatic transmission), and the handbrake must be firmly pulled to prevent vehicle creeping.
Single starting duration ≤ 5 seconds; interval between two starts ≥ 15 seconds, so as to avoid overheating and burning of the starter coil.
If abnormal noise or smoke occurs during the test, disconnect the power supply immediately and troubleshoot the fault before further operation.
II. Technical Specification Precautions
1. Installation Dimension and Clearance Control
The fitting surface between the starter and the flywheel housing shall be clean without oil stains and rust, ensuring full fit with no warping gaps.
The meshing clearance between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear shall be strictly controlled within 2.5–4.0mm (IVECO original factory standard value). Excessively small clearance may cause gear grinding, while excessively large clearance cannot drive the flywheel effectively.
When positioning the starter, manually screw in the positioning bolts first, adjust the angle and then tighten them. Forced alignment is prohibited.
2. Torque and Fastening Specifications
Tighten the mounting bolts in diagonal sequence, strictly following the torque value of 45–50N·m. Insufficient torque will lead to loosening, and excessive torque will cause thread slipping.
Tightening torque of the main power terminal: 20–25N·m; tightening torque of the field terminal: 5–8N·m. Over-torque tightening is not allowed.
Apply thread locker (Loctite 243) to the bolt heads and install lock washers to enhance the anti-loosening effect.
3. Electrical Connection Specifications
Apply copper conductive paste to the main terminal and field terminal to reduce contact resistance and prevent terminal overheating and ablation.
Secure the wiring harness to the engine wiring bracket with cable ties. Keep a clearance of ≥ 50mm from high-temperature components such as the exhaust pipe and cylinder block to avoid aging and damage of the insulating layer.
When reconnecting the negative battery cables, ensure that the voltage of the two batteries is consistent (voltage difference ≤ 0.5V) to prevent insufficient starter power caused by voltage imbalance.
