Installation Method for 1.2KW/12V Starter Motor on Yanmar & Komatsu Equipment
Pre-Installation Preparation
1. Safety and Tool Preparation
Wear safety goggles and non-slip gloves. Prepare tools including a socket wrench set, torque wrench, lithium-based grease, multimeter, and cleaning cloths.
First, park the equipment on a level surface, engage the handbrake to secure the wheels. Disconnect the negative battery cable to eliminate the risk of short-circuit sparking during installation. If the engine has just been shut down, wait for the components to cool to room temperature before proceeding.
2. Parts and Mounting Surface Inspection
Verify that the 1.2KW/12V starter motor model is compatible with the corresponding Yanmar or Komatsu equipment.
Inspect the starter motor housing for no cracks, terminal posts for no oxidation or corrosion, and ensure the solenoid switch and overrunning clutch gear extend and retract smoothly.
Wipe oil, dust, and debris from the starter motor mounting surface on the engine side using a cleaning cloth, and also clean the starter motor's contact surface to ensure tight fitment during installation. Additionally, apply lithium-based grease to the starter motor's O-ring, overrunning clutch spiral splines, and other relevant parts in advance to improve transmission smoothness.
Core Installation Operations
1. Mechanical Fixing and Alignment
Precisely align the starter motor with the mounting position between the engine and flywheel housing. Adjust the angle to achieve initial meshing between the starter drive gear and the flywheel ring gear, and align the bolt holes on the starter motor with those on the mounting bracket (starter motors for Yanmar/Komatsu construction machinery typically feature a 2-3 bolt mounting design).
First, hand-tighten the fixing bolts to position the starter motor and prevent displacement. Then use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the standard specified in the equipment manual. If no specific value is provided, use the general torque range of 49-63.7N·m. Avoid under-tightening (which may cause vibration during operation) or over-tightening (which may deform the starter motor housing). If the end-face gap between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear is abnormal after installation, fine-tune it by adding or removing compatible gaskets.
2. Standard Electrical Wiring Connection
First, connect the thick wire from the positive battery terminal to the starter motor's B-terminal (or Terminal 30), and tighten the fixing nut with a torque wrench to 9-10N·m.
Then insert the control wire connector corresponding to the solenoid switch into the matching S-terminal interface, ensure the buckle is securely locked, and mark the wiring position to avoid confusion. After connection, organize the wiring harness to prevent it from wrapping around the starter motor's moving components or high-temperature areas of the engine. Use wiring clips to secure the harness if necessary.
Post-Installation Testing and Finalization
1. No-Load Test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Use a multimeter to check that the input voltage of the starter motor is stably maintained at 12V.
Briefly activate the starter motor for a no-load test, observing for smooth operation with no abnormal noise or severe vibration. Simultaneously, check that the drive gear extends and retracts smoothly. If jamming occurs, promptly inspect the lubrication or gap conditions.
2. Load Verification
Start the engine and check:
Smooth meshing between the starter gear and the flywheel ring gear.
The starter motor can disengage promptly after the engine starts (no idling or abnormal noise).
If the starter motor lacks power, inspect for loose terminal connections. If there is meshing noise, fine-tune the gap by adjusting the gaskets again.
3. Component Reset and Re-Inspection
If components such as the engine cover or air pipes were removed during installation, reset them one by one and tighten the bolts.
Finally, conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure all connection points are secure, the wiring harness is neatly arranged, and the starter motor shows no signs of abnormal heating. The installation is then complete.
