Mitsubishi 4D33 24V 3.7KW Starter Armature Installation Method (OEM-Grade Specification)
I. Pre-Installation Preparation (Mandatory)
Component Cleaning and Inspection
Armature: No open circuit/short circuit/ablation on the winding; the commutator surface is smooth and free of ablation/grooves; the mica slot depth is 0.5-0.8mm (dress flat with a hacksaw blade if out of tolerance); the radial runout is ≤0.03mm (limit 0.06mm); the journal is free of wear, and the spline is intact.
Bearings/Bushings: No looseness or abnormal noise in the front and rear end cover bearings and intermediate support plate bushings; apply special lithium-based grease (starter-specific, to prevent high-temperature loss).
Brushes and Brush Holder: Brush length is ≥ 2/3 of a new one; uniform spring elasticity; the brush holder is free of deformation and has good insulation. Brush specifications for 24V 3.7KW model: copper-graphite material, width matching the commutator, and spring preload complying with OEM standards.
Stator/Housing: No loose magnetic poles or damaged coils; the inner wall of the housing is clean and free of oil contamination.
One-way Clutch/Drive Gear: Spline is lubricated, meshes smoothly without jamming, and the retaining circlip is intact.
Tools and Consumables
II. Step-by-Step Installation Process (Sequential and Irreversible)
Step 1 Pre-Assembly of Drive End Components (Front End Cover + One-way Clutch + Fork)
Apply grease to the front end cover bushing and armature journal; slide the one-way clutch onto the spline of the armature drive end and install the retaining circlip (secure in place with circlip pliers to prevent falling off).
Install the fork and return spring, apply grease to the fork shaft to ensure the fork swings flexibly without jamming; refit the intermediate bearing support plate and pre-tighten the fixing screws (final tightening to be done later).
Clearance between the drive gear end face and the limit ring: 1.0-4.0mm (Mitsubishi 4D33 OEM standard). Adjust the length of the fork connecting rod/position of the limit nut if out of tolerance.
Step 2 Centering Installation of Armature with Stator/Housing (Core Step)
Apply an extremely thin layer of grease to the magnetic pole surface inside the housing (to prevent abnormal noise, do not over-apply); align the front end cover + armature assembly with the housing locating pin/spigot, push in slowly, and never strike the armature winding and commutator.
Key Operation: Slide the plastic tube over the commutator end of the armature to spread the brushes in the brush holder (to avoid scratching the commutator surface with the brush edges); align the brush holder assembly with the housing/end cover locating groove and slide it onto the armature smoothly.
Pull out the plastic tube, gently pry the brush spring with a screwdriver to place the brush flat on the commutator, then release the spring to ensure the brush fits evenly on the commutator without deflection. For new brushes, place 500# sandpaper (abrasive side up) between the brush and commutator and rotate the armature slightly to break in the contact surface.
Step 3 Installation and Tightening of Rear End Cover (Torque-Critical)
Apply grease to the rear end cover bearing, align it with the housing spigot and locating pin, and install the through long bolts (4 pieces of M6/M8 through long bolts are commonly used for Mitsubishi 4D33 24V 3.7KW starter).
Torque Tightening (OEM Standard):
Through long bolts: 8-10 N·m (tighten evenly diagonally in 2-3 passes to prevent housing deformation).
Intermediate support plate/end cover fixing screws: 4-6 N·m.
Solenoid switch fixing bolts: 12-15 N·m (for integral installation).
Inspect Armature Rotation: Rotate the armature by hand; it should rotate smoothly without jamming or frictional abnormal noise. The axial endplay is 0.1-0.3mm (adjust the bearing shims if out of tolerance).
Step 4 Connection of Solenoid Switch and Wiring Harness (24V-Specific)
The solenoid switch contacts are clean and free of ablation; the resistance of the pull-in/holding coil complies with OEM standards (24V model: pull-in coil ≈ 0.5-0.8Ω, holding coil ≈ 1.5-2.0Ω).
Connect the copper sheet/terminal between the switch and the stator coil with all insulating washers in place, and tighten the nut to the specified torque (6-8 N·m). Connect the M terminal to the motor main wire, the 50 terminal to the starter control wire, and ensure reliable grounding.
Install the dust cover/rubber sleeve to prevent oil contamination and water vapor from entering.

Key Precautions for Installation of Mitsubishi 4D33 24V 3.7KW Starter Armature (OEM Specification · Practical Focus)
I. Pre-Installation Protection and Inspection Precautions
Disconnect the negative battery terminal throughout the entire process to prevent the solenoid switch from being triggered by tool short circuit, which may cause sudden rotation of the armature or ablation of the circuit.
Oil contamination and water vapor are strictly prohibited on the armature, commutator and insulating parts of the brush holder. Clean insulating parts only with a dry cloth and metal parts with kerosene followed by air drying. Never clean the windings and brush holder with water.
The depth of the commutator mica slot must be maintained at 0.5-0.8mm; an insufficient depth will cause sparks due to contact between the brush and mica. The armature must be straightened if the radial runout exceeds 0.06mm, otherwise it will lead to uneven brush wear and eccentric operation of the armature.
The armature journal and spline must be free of wear and deformation. A loose spline will cause slipping of the one-way clutch, directly affecting the power transmission of the armature, and the matching parts must be replaced in such a case.
Inspect the insulation of the armature winding. Measure the insulation resistance between the winding and the iron core with a 500V megohmmeter; a resistance of ≥50MΩ is qualified. Installation is strictly prohibited if the resistance is unqualified (to avoid short circuit and burnout of the starter after on-vehicle installation).
II. Core Operational Precautions During Assembly
Armature Centering and Scratch Prevention
Push the armature into the housing/end cover slowly and steadily with accurate alignment to the locating pin/spigot. Striking the armature winding and commutator is strictly prohibited (the enameled wire of the winding is prone to breakage and the commutator surface is likely to form pits). If striking is necessary, tap the edge of the end cover gently with a copper rod.
A special plastic tube or insulating plate must be used to spread the brushes; prying the brushes directly with a screwdriver or scratching the commutator is strictly forbidden. Scratches on the commutator caused by brush edges will lead to excessive sparks and armature ablation during operation.
Check the fit of the brush after it is placed on the commutator; a contact area of ≥75% is qualified. New brushes must be slightly ground for running-in to avoid high-temperature ablation caused by local contact.
