Installation Method of Armature for 24V Delco 29MT Series PLGR Planetary Gear Reduction Starter (Original Factory Service Specification Version)
I. Pre-installation Preparation and Armature Pre-inspection (Mandatory to Avoid Post-installation Rework)
1. Tools and Materials
2. Mandatory Armature Pre-inspection (Installation Prohibited if Unqualified)
Commutator Surface: Smooth and free of ablation, grooves and copper chip accumulation; the undercut depth of mica slots is compliant (0.5-0.8mm), without protrusions or short-circuit burn marks.
Winding Insulation: The insulation resistance of armature windings to iron core and shaft is ≥100MΩ (24V system), without interturn short circuit, open circuit or desoldering.
Shaft Journal and Runout: No bending or wear grooves on the armature shaft; the radial runout of the commutator is ≤0.03mm (limit ≤0.06mm), replacement is mandatory if exceeding the tolerance.
Splines and Shaft End: No wear or burrs on the splines of the drive end; the retainer ring groove on the shaft end is intact without deformation or cracks.
Cleaning Treatment: Wipe the armature clean with a lint-free cloth; no oil, iron filings or carbon powder are allowed to enter between the windings and commutator segments.
3. Safety and Pre-installation Operations
Disconnect the starter completely from the equipment and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery; live assembly is prohibited.
Disassemble the starter, separate the drive end (DE), field housing, commutator end (CE), brush holder, solenoid switch and shift fork, and make alignment marks for easy reassembly.
Thoroughly clean the housing inner cavity, bearing seats, bushing holes and brush holder, free of oil, rust and impurities.
II. Pre-installation of Armature Shaft End Fittings (Drive End + Commutator End, Irreversible Sequence)
1. Pre-installation of Drive End (Planetary Reduction/One-way Clutch End)
Apply a thin layer of original factory high-temperature grease to the splines and shaft journal of the armature shaft drive end.
Install in sequence: thrust washer → one-way clutch/planetary carrier assembly → limit retainer ring → snap ring (snap into the shaft groove and lock in place securely).
Use snap ring pliers to confirm that the snap ring is fully expanded into the groove; check the axial play allowance with a feeler gauge to ensure the drive gear can extend and retract flexibly without jamming or looseness.
Restore the thickness of the thrust washer according to the original factory configuration; no arbitrary increase or decrease is allowed to avoid abnormal axial clearance causing gear chipping and abnormal noise.
2. Pre-installation of Commutator End (Rear End)
Install a new leather brake washer/wear-resistant washer on the shaft end, close to the root of the commutator to play the role of shock absorption, limiting and preventing axial movement.
Check that the bushing/bearing at the commutator end is intact; apply a small amount of grease to the inner wall to ensure smooth rotation of the armature without jamming.
III. Fitting the Armature Main Body into the Housing (Core Step, PLGR-specific Operation)
Step 1: Brush Holder Pre-treatment (Prevent Commutator Scratching, Critical for PLGR)
Push all brushes outward and fix them with insulating sleeves or special protective covers to make the brushes completely separate from the central channel, avoiding scratching the commutator surface when installing the armature.
Check that the brush spring pressure is uniform and the brushes slide smoothly in the brush holder without jamming or skewing.
Step 2: Vertically Fit the Armature into the Stator Inner Cavity
Place the drive end (DE) housing horizontally and reset the shift fork in place.
Hold the armature core with both hands and slowly lower it vertically into the field housing inner cavity, keeping it concentric with the stator magnetic field; no tilting, bumping or forced hammering is allowed.
Ensure the armature drive end shaft journal is accurately seated in the drive end bearing/bushing and the commutator end is aligned with the rear bushing, without eccentricity or jamming. Align the drive end sliding sleeve with the shift fork slot to ensure the shift fork is fully embedded and moves freely without disengagement or jamming.
Step 3: Release the Brushes and Attach to the Commutator
Remove the protective cover and slowly release the brush springs to make the brushes naturally and smoothly attach to the cylindrical surface of the commutator; no single-point stress or bouncing impact is allowed.
Manually rotate the armature slightly to confirm that all brushes are fully attached without bouncing, scratching or uneven wear.
Lightly polish the commutator with 600# sandpaper to match the brush contact surface and improve electrical conductivity and heat dissipation performance.
Core Installation Precautions for Armature of 24V Delco 29MT Series PLGR Starter
I. Pre-installation Safety and Non-negotiable Pre-inspection Criteria (Installation Prohibited if Unqualified, to Avoid Rework)
Power-off operation for the entire process: Disconnect the starter completely from the equipment and battery. Live assembly and testing are strictly prohibited to prevent short-circuit sparking and winding ablation. The assembly area must be free of oil, iron filings and dust; no impurities are allowed to enter the starter housing cavity.
Mandatory pre-inspection of the armature itself: The commutator surface must be free of ablation, grooves and copper chips, with a standard mica slot undercut depth of 0.5-0.8mm and no protrusions; the armature shaft must be straight without worn splines, and the commutator radial runout must be ≤0.03mm (maximum limit ≤0.06mm) – immediate replacement is required if the tolerance is exceeded; the insulation resistance of windings to the iron core/shaft must be ≥100MΩ, with no interturn short circuit, desoldering or insulation damage.
